Dupont Circle is a cosmopolitan neighborhood renowned institutions, historic homes and buildings, fine museums and foreign embassies as well as a variety of ethnic restaurants, bookstores, private art galleries, and nightlife venues. The area was first settled 125 years ago, when Dupont Circle itself was originally called Pacific Circle and located at what was then the western boundary of the city. The Circle was renamed in 1884 after Civil War Admiral Samuel F. DuPont, and was adorned in 1921 by a fountain designed by Daniel Chester French as a memorial to the US Navy. The sculpted figures on the fountain represent the sea, wind, and stars.
